Course Highlights

The Master of Science in Building Technology (SMBT) provides a focus for graduate students interested in the development and application of advanced technology for buildings.

Career Opportunities

The construction industry is vital to economy and society. Careers are on offer in building and assembling infrastructure, and construction projects in homes and buildings. Careers in construction include project managers and construction managers, who coordinate and plan the work to be done by construction workers and skilled labourers and oversee the overall operations of the site and project. Professionals in this role should have a bachelors degree or significant work experience in the field. Other hands-on careers include labourers, construction equipment operators, plumbers, electricians and welders who may work directly for construction companies or work under contract for specific job purposes. In addition, there are many other careers associated with the construction industry including estimators, surveyors, contract administrators and inspectors that are charged with ensuring proper building codes and safety regulations. While advanced degrees can now help individuals gain the skill necessary to work in this field, much of the work involves practical, hands-on experience and technical knowledge of the materials and functioning properties of fixtures and structures. Individuals in this field typically enjoy working outdoors using physical labour and manually working on projects, and should be interested in how things work. There is a great deal of coordinating and planning in the field is imperative. Many professionals and workers in the construction field may work based on specific project contracts for large companies, small projects and individual clients. Professionals in the field must work with a variety of stakeholders, including the client, government authorities, planners and designers, and building code and regulation inspectors.

Course Overview

Students in this program take relevant subjects in basic engineering disciplines along with subjects which apply these topics to buildings. The program accepts students with undergraduate degrees in a variety of engineering disciplines, in the physical sciences, or in architecture with a suitable background in technology. Students also come to the program with diverse job experiences, from the design of space-conditioning equipment for buildings to the Peace Corps. All share both a keen interest in buildings and a thorough education in mathematics, physics and other technical subjects. Each student admitted to the SMBT program will take part in a research project. A major contribution to the student's education in this program comes from the experience gained carrying out research and design on the fundamentals of new technologies and their application to buildings. The research project will normally be on a subject under current investigation by an interdepartmental team of faculty and students from the Departments of Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering or by an individual faculty member. This research is used to fulfill the thesis requirement for the degree. The research projects, sponsored by industry and the government, give the students exposure to practitioners dealing with important issues in the building field.
