Course Overview
Merchandising encompasses the planning, developing, presenting and selling of clothing and home furnishings in consumer-driven markets. A bachelor's degree can help prepare you for many positions, including: Buyer for retail stores Store manager in retail store operations Sales representative in wholesale Supplier to retail stores Quality control and product development manager Graduates have worked as merchandisers for companies such as Fossil, J.C. Penney, Havertys, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Target, Tuesday Morning and Zale Corp. The Executive-in-Residence program brings merchandising executives to our college for lectures and meetings with students. Recruiters also frequently visit the campus to provide additional insights career opportunities. You can earn 3 credit hours through a merchandising study tour. You may go to New York or Dallas to tour showrooms, manufacturing facilities, retail establishments, museums and significant historical structures. Study abroad opportunities to Hong Kong/China, London and France can provide international exposure to the fashion industry.
Subjects
Programme Structure As a Merchandising major, you will take courses in consumer studies, textiles, fashion theory and trend analysis, brand development, promotion, global issues, and merchandising math. In addition, you must complete 18 credit hours of business courses, including courses in accounting, management, marketing and retailing. You may also have an opportunity to showcase your work in the college s annual research competition. The Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting handson experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.
